Help & FAQ

Everything you need to know about recording, sharing, and getting the most out of Focuscap.

Getting Started

How do I install Focuscap?

Download the DMG from focuscap.co, open it, and drag Focuscap into your Applications folder. On first launch you'll be asked to grant a few permissions — screen recording, microphone, and camera.

What permissions does Focuscap need?

Focuscap needs Screen Recording to capture your display, Microphone for audio narration, Camera for the webcam overlay, and optionally Input Monitoring to highlight mouse clicks. You can grant these in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

How do I sign in?

Click "Continue with Google" for one-tap sign-in, or use email and password. Passwords must be at least 8 characters and include an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number, and a special character.

How do I start my first recording?

Click the Focuscap icon in your menu bar, choose a recording mode (Full Screen, Window, or Area), toggle your camera and microphone on or off, then click Start Recording. You can also press ⌘⇧R from anywhere.

Recording

What recording modes are available?

Full Screen captures your entire display. Window mode lets you pick a single application window. Area mode lets you draw a custom rectangle to record a specific region of your screen.

How do I add my camera to a recording?

Toggle the Camera switch in the recording panel. A floating camera bubble will appear on screen. You can drag it anywhere, resize it (small, medium, large), and customize its border color and thickness using the bar below the bubble.

How do I record system audio?

Turn on the Microphone toggle, then enable "Record computer sounds" in the microphone dropdown. This captures both your voice and any audio playing on your Mac.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

⌘⇧R — Start or stop recording. ⌘⇧P — Pause or resume. ⌘⇧F — Open the Focuscap panel. Escape — Cancel the current recording.

Is there a recording time limit?

Free plan: 5 minutes per recording. Pro: 30 minutes. Pro+: unlimited. A warning banner appears when you're approaching the limit.

What video format and quality are available?

Recordings are saved as WebM (VP9 codec). Free plan supports 720p. Pro unlocks 1080p. Pro+ goes up to 4K. You can choose your preferred quality in Settings → Video & Audio.

Camera & Microphone

Can I use an external webcam?

Yes. Focuscap detects all connected cameras including USB webcams, built-in cameras, and Continuity Camera (iPhone as webcam on macOS 14+). Select your preferred camera from the dropdown.

How do I flip (mirror) the camera?

Use the flip icon in the camera bubble's customization bar, or go to Settings → Video & Audio → Flip camera. The preview and recording will mirror in real time.

Can I switch microphones?

Yes. Click the microphone dropdown in the recording panel to choose between available audio input devices.

Sharing & Upload

How does sharing work?

When you stop recording, your video uploads automatically. A shareable link is copied to your clipboard and the recording opens in your browser. Share the link with anyone — no sign-in required to watch.

Can I share without signing in?

No. You need to be signed in for your recording to upload and generate a share link. Without an account, recordings are saved locally only.

What if the upload fails?

An error message appears with a Retry button. Your recording is safely stored on your Mac in ~/Documents/Focuscap/ and can be uploaded later.

Are my recordings private?

Your Gallery is completely private. Individual recordings are accessible only to people who have the share link — they are not listed publicly anywhere.

AI Transcription

How does transcription work?

When you record with a microphone, Focuscap automatically transcribes the audio using AI after the recording ends. The transcript appears on the Watch page below the video.

Can I turn off transcription?

Yes. Go to Settings → Video & Audio and toggle Transcription off. Your recordings will still capture audio but won't generate a text transcript.

What languages are supported?

English is fully supported today. Multi-language transcription is on our roadmap.

Plans & Billing

What plans are available?

Free — 10 recordings, 5-minute limit, 720p. Pro ($4/mo) — unlimited recordings, 30-minute limit, 1080p. Pro+ ($10/mo) — unlimited everything, 4K quality, priority support.

How do I upgrade?

Right-click the menu bar icon and select "Free Plan — Upgrade", or visit focuscap.co/subscribe. Payment is handled securely through Stripe.

What happens when I hit the free recording limit?

At 10 recordings, new recordings are blocked and an upgrade prompt appears. You can delete older recordings to free up slots, or upgrade to Pro for unlimited recordings.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Go to Settings → Subscription → Manage. This opens the Stripe customer portal where you can cancel. You keep access until the end of your current billing period.

Do I lose recordings if I downgrade?

No. Your existing recordings are never deleted when you downgrade. New recordings will follow Free tier limits (5 min, 720p).

Troubleshooting

Screen Recording permission denied

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording and make sure Focuscap is enabled. You may need to restart the app after granting the permission.

Recording starts but the screen is black

This usually means Screen Recording permission hasn't been granted yet. Enable it in System Settings and restart Focuscap.

Camera preview not showing

Check that Camera permission is granted in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Also make sure no other app is exclusively using the camera.

"Session expired" or automatic sign-out

Your authentication token has expired. Simply sign in again. This is normal security behavior and your recordings are not affected.

Upload stuck at 0%

Check your internet connection. If you're using a VPN, try disabling it temporarily. The recording is saved locally and you can retry the upload.

"Too many attempts" on login

This is a rate limit to protect your account. Wait about 15 minutes and try again.

Keyboard shortcuts not working

Focuscap may need Accessibility permission. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and enable Focuscap.

Privacy & Security

What data does Focuscap collect?

We collect your email address, recording metadata (duration, date, file size), and the video files you upload. We do not access or analyze the content of your recordings.

Where are my credentials stored?

Passwords are hashed and stored in AWS Cognito. Authentication tokens are kept in the macOS Keychain — they never touch UserDefaults or plain-text storage.

Where are my videos stored?

Locally in ~/Documents/Focuscap/ on your Mac, and in Cloudflare R2 cloud storage when uploaded. Videos are transmitted over HTTPS and stored with secure access controls.

Can I delete all my data?

You can delete individual recordings from your Gallery. For full account deletion, go to Settings → Delete Account. All data is permanently removed within 24 hours.
